Earth Day has arrived once more, and people are flocking to events and initiatives that celebrate the planet. It is amazing how far we have come in the 39 years of Earth Day. There are still challenges, but we have progressed a long way since the early 70′s. The Canadian Brodcast Corperation (CBC) has a great retrospective on their website right now. www.cbc.ca/photogallery/news/2169/. A great reminder of what has been accomplished.
A subtler sign that the environment is of value to people is how it is integrated into society. A good example of the integration of environment and society is Last Child in the Woods-Revised: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. This book, writen with a very distict environmental focus, is not found in the nature section of your local book store. Amazon.com lists it under psycology, and Indigo/Chapters has it under parenting. The environment is no longer a nieche topic discussed only by activists. It is truly part of our society, and it is Earth Day that we should thank for that.
