By now many of you will have seen the performance by Susan Boyle on the television show Britain’s Got Talent, or you will have seen it through a video sharing site like You Tube. What has struck me as most interesting is not Susan’s singing, but how the public is examining their own perceptions of who can sing and how appearance effects those perceptions. More and more commentary and blogs are looking into the public reaction to Susan’s performance. This social discourse is amazing. Some sites are looking at the disconnect between the appearance of famous men, and famous woman. Other sites are looking at why Susan has not been celebratedfor her contributions to her community before this television show. This is a change from the reactions that people have given in the past. We have reacted with surprise at the success of unassuming singers and dancers. The public has not taken the opportunity in the past to look at their own reactions. Now the public has the opportunity to discuss what they believe is moving, powerful, or skillfull with a more inclusive lens. So take the time to enjoy Susan Boyle’s performance for the moving peice that it is, and head out into cyberspace to discuss how Susan Boyle is Changing Society.
