Time is money. This is the mantra of many an executive and manager. Used to describe waste, this idiom is a classic representation of Capitalism. One organisation though is auctioning off your time for charity. Timeraiser has come up with an interesting mix of cocktail party and volunteer recruitment. The premiseis to bring 20 to 30 year old professionals together with local volunteer organisations. In a very sleek presentation style worthy of the young and up’n'coming, participants meet a variety of volunteer groups and local artists. There is an opportunity to then ask questions of what the goals and needs are of the volunteer groups. And now for the cocktail party. Local artists will provide items to be auctioned off, with the currency being your pledged time. Interested in a piece of art, raise the bid the time you are willing to volunteer. You can try and slow bid, if you are not sure the time commitment will work, or place a maximum bid of 125 hours. Once all the bidding is closed, the winners have one year to volunteer their pledged hours with one of the attending groups. The art is then presented at the next years Timeraiser to those who completed or exceeded their hours.
A group I am associated with is applying to be at this event. It is a long process, but a new and creative solution to recruiting deserves a chance. Check back with Seeing Change for updates.
