Athletes work hard at their sport. Many work odd jobs to cover a few expenses. A few live on less than $300 a month. As an individual with an intellectual disability, getting to the sport that you love can be difficult. Getting to practice can involve hours of transit time, on someone else’s schedule. And yet these athletes are the epitome of perseverance, dedication and truly love to compete. And the time to compete is apon them.
June 26th to the 28th, Special Olympics Alberta is having their Provincial Summer Games in St. Albert. 1000 Athletes from around the province will be competing in 8 sports. This event is also a qualifier for The National Games in London Ontario in 2010.
This year I have the honor of coaching for one of the sports. I will take this opportunity to share the stories and successes that these athletes demonstrate. My spirit will be uplifted by the athletes competing, and so can yours. If you are in the Edmonton area during the weekend of June 26th to 28th, come cheer on these amazing athletes.
