Cycling in Edmonton can be a wonderful thing. With an amazing river valley to ride though, and most stores running riding groups, there is always a way of getting involved in riding. This approach caters to the recreational rider (which is important). But what is needed to take a rider from recreational, to sustainable transportation enthusiast. One of the largest barriers is the knowledge and confidence to work on and repair ones own bike. We have lost touch with our ability to work with relatively simple machines. Now we can take a bike to a service center at our favorite store, or as the old adage reminds us, we can learn to fish. BikeWorks, which is run be the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters will gladly help anyone learn to repair their own bike, and possible how to fish.
Located in the heart of the Old Strathcona (10047 – 80 Avenue, Back Alley), BikeWorks has volunteer mechanics on site to help with repairs and information for the cycling enthusiast.

EBC operates BikeWorks, a fully equipped, volunteer-run community bicycle shop. We have general purpose tools and many of the specialty bicycle tools you need to repair and maintain your two-wheeler.
With help and guidance from our trusty volunteer mechanics, members and the wider community can do their own repairs and perform their own maintenance.

Having worked with many of the volunteers and organizers of the Edmonton Bicycle Commuters, I know how passionate they are about everyone having access to a good bike to ride, and ride safely.
One of my favorite ideas that they run are their how-to workshops for very Edmontonian needs. I do not know many other cities that have groups that will teach you how to stud your tire for winter riding. Yes, some of us still ride at -20C and snow to our hubs.
If you are in the Edmonton area, go check out how empowering it is to repair your own bike, or look-up cycling commuter groups in your area for more info. It truly is a positive learning experience, and a positive stepĀ for society.
