This year I have been doing school programs relating to carbon footprints. At each session we work through one of the many calculators out there, and the discussion over the last month has always com to Earth Hour.
Earth Hour is a great way of bringing awareness to energy usage and greenhouse gas emission control. Here is a great video from World Wildlife Fund on Earth Hour.
What I have noticed this year is the traction that Earth Hour has gained in public places. The City of Edmonton is not only hosting an event downtown to mark the occasion, they are leading by example. Here are a couple of posts from Transforming Edmonton showing some creative Earth Hour actions. Elementary ways to save power and Making Every Hour Earth Hour show the personal side of Edmonton staff and Earth Hour.
Right next to City Hall is the Winspear Center, home of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Now the ESO has a show the night of Earth Hour, but that has not stopped them from showing their support. All non essential front of house lights will be turned off for Earth Hour, but they have gone a step further. The have purchased green power from Bullfrog Power to offset the rest of the electricity from running the show. Good on ya ESO and Winspear. This shows the other side of earth hour. Take action to reduce the power you use, and the truly think about what the best option is for the power you do need.
Yes, I will be at City Hall to see the city go dark, and I will enjoy every moment of it. Many people will be affected by Earth Hour this year. From those who are in malls, recreation facilities, and resturants who see the lights go out, to those who hoast parties in the dark with others, many will jopin in the discussion.
