In an announcement today, the Government of Canada provided funding for a green building project in Edmonton, Alberta. Station Pointe is one of six winning projects under the EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative. The area, near Fort Road, is part of a larger redevelopment of an industrial zone into residential.
The EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative will provide funding for selected developers to assist in the planning and development of green communities. While not designed to pay for the cost of the buildings, it will provide a great design initiative to add green space and control energy use within the community. The developments were chosen on these criteria.

EQuilibrium™ Communities project submissions were chosen through a national competition and evaluated by an external panel of industry experts against the following criteria:
Energy – an energy-efficient community that balances energy supply and use to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
Land Use and Housing – a compact community with a balanced mix of activities, housing choices and commercial, institutional, recreational and industrial land uses.
Water, Waste Water and Storm Water – a community that will minimize the use and disposal of water and negative impacts on watersheds.
Transportation – a community that reduces fossil-fuel use from personal vehicle travel and provides opportunities for energy-efficient and healthy alternatives.
Natural Environment – a community that protects, enhances and restores the natural environment.
Financial Viability – a marketable community that through its design, operation, integration and financing is economically viable over the long term.

I really liked this quote from Minister Paradis. “Building sustainable communities that use clean energy technologies and energy-efficient designs will help create high-quality jobs for Canadians while protecting and preserving our environment,”. This is one of the first times I have seen a Conservative government show a desire to create new jobs in green tech and design. This is where society is going, and it is nic eto see governments supporting it.
