World Water Day, or, How a Drip Changes The World

Water is a big deal. Life does not exist with out it, as well; it is also a multi billion dollar industry. This challenges us to truly look at water, and make a decision on where we want our world to be in 10 years. Water management is finally on many governments agendas, and many more people are taking action to ensure clean safe water for the world.

First a little background. Treehugger.com has a great chart showing what percent of the world’s water is accessible and usable for humans, as well as how it relates to other water stats. It is amazing how little water keeps humans going. Continue reading

Re:Sessions, Skiing with a Green Edge

I like a good ski movie. Amazing scenery, athletic achievement, and as a good Canadian should love, lots of snow. An this year I have found  a great one, with a green edge to it.

Re:Sessions DVD ImageRe: Session (great play on the state of the world), is a new film this ski season from Teton Gravity Research (TGR). This carbon neutral film boast some of the best cinematography of the year. Yes it takes fuel to get some of the shots, but TGR offsets this completely, to become a carbon neutral film.  And TGR makes the best of that offset. Dynamic shots that bring you right into the action, and vast vistas of open snow covered mountains.

Along with the offsets, TGR uses recycled packaging for their DVD’s, and is also a great advocate for the environment. TGR has helped to create Protect Our Winters (POW), a non-profit group devoted to highlighting the impact of climate change. TGR is also a 1% For The Planet member.

So this well produced film is also one of the greenest. A must watch for 2010.

Teton Gravity Research can be found on Twitter @TetonGravity, Updates can also be found for @protectwinters, and @1PercentFTP

Womens Heart Health Awareness – National Wear Red Day®

One of the things I find most inspiring is the ability and desire to bring a stereotyped issue to its knees. One of the hardest issues is the demographics of heart disease. Everyone thinks of heart disease happening to only to overweight men. That is just not the case. One in four women die from heart disease. It is just not recognised as a risk. And here is where you can help. February 5 is National Wear Red Day®, in support of womens heart disease awwarness.

Here is an excerpt from the Bloggers Unite website on how you can bring awarness to the issue of heart disease in women.

“The Red Dress®, the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness, was created by The Heart Truth® in 2002 to deliver an urgent wake up call to American women. Everyone can participate in the national movement by wearing their favorite red dress, shirt, tie, or Red Dress Pin on Friday, February 5, 2010.”

Check out this toolkit from  The Heart Truth® and help bring the red dress to the public on February 5th. There are lots of great ways for you to show your support and bring the perception of heart disease to a national issue, not one of gender.

Transforming Edmonton

I have stumbled onto a great new site, one that has me proud to be living in Edmonton.

Have you ever wanted to know what action you city was doing for the environment? Or what struggles face those who are trying to improve the city from within? Transforming Edmonton provides an insight into the goals and successes of change from within the City of Edmonton. Members of various departments around the city write on the ideas that form from where they work. Topics like open data are made personal, and the joy of teaching about carbon footprints exemplifies a positive environmental movement.

What I have learned is that categories for the posts, which are great reads, are based on the new strategic goals of the City of Edmonton. It is encouraging to see goals based on transportation, environment, and public information.Very holistic, very inclusive, and very worthy of the citizens of Edmonton.

Here is a quick video from their site. See where the City of Edmonton is heading, and how the staff are Transforming Edmonton
